Franklin River

I was particularly impressed by the level of knowledge and professionalism exhibited by the river guides, Shaun and Anna. Whether it be tackling a difficult rapid, describing the fauna, flora and history of the area, preparing the campsite, producing amazing meals or subtly directing and supporting me in potentially dangerous situations, I always felt completely safe and comfortable.

Franklin River and Frenchman's Cap

For the ultimate Tasmanian wilderness experience, this 11 day rafting trip takes advantage of the access the Franklin River offers to the prized summit of the Frenchman's Cap. From Irenabyss on the Franklin River, you will undertake a one-day ascent from the river to the quartzite dome of Frenchman's Cap (1443m), from where you can enjoy 360 degree views over the entire south west wilderness. Returning to the river you'll continue this classic rafting adventure, meeting the challenges of Great Ravine, Propsting Gorge and Newlands Cascades. The massive temperate rainforests of the lower Franklin and Gordon Rivers are an inspirational reminder of what was saved when the Franklin Dam was stopped in 1983. Led by experienced rafting guides, this rafting expedition is recognised by many as one of the greatest wilderness experiences on earth. Our trip was named the best river journey in the world by Outside Magazine in 2012. Join on us on this real wilderness experience of a lifetime.

traveller reviews

Seeing the great ravine in flood was absolutely sensational. We were lucky enough to see the river and the weather in all its moods - freezing cold rainy days right through to sunny 30 degree days. A calm, tranquil, stunningly beautiful river right through to a raging beast! It was all absolutely mind blowing. Loved the adrenalin! Jordie is an absolute river god! Such amazing knowledge, skill and composure, he made the trip an absolute dream come true. We had an awesome small group, with 4 great guides so plenty of laughs and shenanigans. Thankyou so much!! Cant rate it highly enough.
