Want to join Tasmania’s very own version of the universal peak bagging phenomena? The Abel Challenge is a demanding test to climb all 158 summits in Tasmania that are over 1100 metres. This aspirational list of mountains is modelled directly on Scotland’s famed Munros, a collection of 282 Scottish peaks above 914 metres, and is beginning to attract more and more walkers back to the island state to complete this little known feat.
With 158 peaks in total, many tucked away in Tasmania’s rugged and remote landscape, this challenge may well take even the most experienced walkers a lifetime to complete. The rules of play are simple: Mountains need to be higher than 1,100m above sea level, and be separated from other mountains by a drop of at least 150m on all sides. With this in mind, there are 158 peaks across Tasmania that are qualified as Abels.
