Trip highlights

  • Discover the wonders of Tasmania's ancient Alpine Wilderness
  • Experience the exhilaration for jumping and floating through a series of canyons and cascades and six waterfalls
  • Walk through pristine rain forest to this stunning canyon.

Many people enjoy the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park on foot, very few know about the parks hidden canyons which are some of the most spectacular and awe inspiring canyons in the world. This full-day canyoning experience to Dove Canyon is Tassie adventure at its best. We walk through pristine rain forest to this stunning canyon. After abseiling in, we spend the day walking and floating through the canyon and doing what we have to do to navigate the obstacles we find along the way. The main obstacles are six waterfalls which we abseil, jump or slide off! One of the highlights is the Laundry Chute - a ten metre high natural slide that shoots you out of a large cave (which we call The Pit) into a big open pool. Very unique and highly exhilarating.

Each canyoning tour is led by experienced, highly trained and skilled guides who have internationally recognised First Aid, Swiftwater Rescue and Abseiling qualifications. They will provide you with a thorough pre-trip briefing to ensure your trip through the canyon is both safe and fun.

Itinerary

The morning tour starts at either 9:30am at the Cradle Mountains Visitors Centre - please arrive no later than 9:15am (during daylight savings) OR at 8:30am at the Cradle Mountains Visitors Centre - please arrive no later than 8:15am (outside of daylight savings) OR occassionally some departures with start at 10:30am. Here you receive all of your necessary gear for the canyoning excursion, before being transferred by minivan to the start of the trip. Today there are six waterfalls to navigate in a deep canyon surrounded by stunning rain forest. This is a committing trip - once you're in, there's only one way out and there is no way to walk around any of the waterfalls. Having said that, most of our clients have no canyoning experience, and it doesn't require any particular skills as such - just an ability to swim and a sense of adventure. The tour will start off with an abseil into the canyon which is approx. 10-12m high which is basically a vertical abseil. There are 6 waterfalls that you will navigate either by jumping or sliding and one of them will involve a small abseil of approx. 4m. The highest waterfall jump will be approx. 6m. The hardest part of the day physically is the hike out of the canyon. It is 20 minutes, up a steep hill, in a wetsuit, to get back to where our dry clothes are waiting for us. The full canyoning will take between 6 to 8 hours. The trip ends at around 4-4:30pm, when we return to Cradle Mountains Visitors Centre.
