The Overland Track Styles

Guided or Self-Guided?

Tick, The Overland Track is the next great adventure you have your heart set on completing.

The next step is to decide if you will explore this internationally renowned alpine trek, with a guided group or on a self-guided itinerary.

A guided tour with Tasmanian Expeditions is about convenience, security and knowledge while a self-guided experience allows for flexibility, independence and freedom.

Both options are equally as rewarding, depending on how you want to experience this magnificent and memorable trek.

Travelling on a guided Tasmanian Expeditions walk equals minimal stress. Tasmanian Expeditions organises all the logistics for you on a guided tour including access to National Park passes, providing camping equipment and supplies and leading you in the right direction each day.

A guided tour also gives you access to our guides’ expertise and their deep local knowledge of the region’s flora and fauna, history, geography and culture. And all our guides are First Aid certified.

Trekking on a guided tour with like-minded people who love the great outdoors and the challenge of an adventure has many advantages, such as forming new friendships, enjoying the camaraderie of the group or simply sitting by the campsite each night discussing the day’s adventure.

Self-guided tour allows for flexibility, you choose when you depart. You are in control of your adventure and experience. Exploration of the destination is on your time and you decide how long you will spend out discovering in the wilderness. You can choose who to walk with or do it on your own. Of course, Tasmanian Expeditions provides 24-hour 7 days support and safety to our adventurous trekkers. An orientation with maps and details notes are provided with questions asked to the expert staff on the destinations, route, logistics and more. You will have all the information you need to start the expedition.

The Overland Track snakes its way through the heart of Tasmania’s World Heritage wilderness. The internationally famed 65-kilometre track stretches out from St Clair to the famous Cradle Mountain.

Journey through deep forests with its towering trees, various shades of green moss and lichen, walk along sub-alpine plateaus and marvel at the highland landscapes. Summit Tasmania’s highest peaks Mt Ossa and most photographed Cradle Mountain. Get up close with the local wildlife and spot the endemic wildflowers.

Walking the Overland Track is most enjoyable between October and May with either style of a guide or self- guided. During the winter season we highly recommend the adventure with a professional guide, due to the dramatic weather conditions.  Exploring the Overland Track in winter is stunning and a unique experience with snowshoes and camping in the snow. The scenery is magical, a winter wonderland.
